Zhang Wuji is separated from Xie Xun when they are attacked by a group of warriors on an ice lake. He falls into a crevice and discovers a cave where he finds a dying man who teaches him the Nine Yang Manual.
Zhang Wuji returns to the mainland and meets several people who become important in his life, such as Zhou Zhiruo, a nun from the Emei Sect; Zhao Min, a Mongol princess; Yin Li, a girl with a scarred face; Zhu Jiuzhen, a poison expert; and Xiaozhao, a Persian girl.

Zhang Wuji decides to leave the martial arts world and live a peaceful life with Zhao Min, his true love. He passes on his leadership of the Ming Cult to Yang Bu hui, Zhou Zhiruo's senior sister. He also entrusts the Heavenly Sword and the Dragon Slaying Sabre to Xie Xun, who has been reunited with him.
